Crayon's Have Rules (Melting Crayon Art)
Since my son is just a couple months shy of being old enough to go to Preschool we have been teaching him mini lessons every other. These are lessons we come up with on our own and also ones we get from Joy School. Today we learned about following rules. We learned that everyone and everything has to obey rules (because what 2 year old believes that?!?!). I taught him that even Crayons have to obey rules. He didn't believe me and that is where the magic melting crayon activity came in.
I explained that crayons had to follow 2 rules:
1. Crayons can only color on paper. (Trying to save my antique kitchen table from my his masterpieces)
2. When crayons get hot, they have to melt.
We then proceeded to do the following activity:
What You Will Need
Crayons
Cheese Grater
Plain White Piece of Paper
Tin Foil
Thin Kitchen Towel
Ironing Board/Iron
1.Unless you trust your young one with a cheese grater you will need to grate the crayons before hand. This can get messy so I would suggest doing it over newspaper so it is an easy clean up. Place the grated crayons in bowls or on the newspaper.
2. Pre-fold the plain white piece of paper and let your kids/or yourself create their masterpiece by having them place the shavings on the paper.
3. Fold the paper back up and place it between two sheets of Tin Foil so that the paper can not be seen and place the thin towel on top. This will ensure that your iron does not get crayon on it.
4. Iron the towel on a medium setting until the crayon has melted and the masterpiece is done!
